Transcribing the commentaries, failure #1

So a few weeks ago on John Rogers’ blog he answered a question from a hearing-impaired viewer who wanted to know if the commentaries had been transcribed anywhere since they weren’t captioned on the DVDs.

3) Does anyone know of any place where the commentaries are transcribed or, at least, bits and pieces of them? Since I’m hearing-impaired, the traditional commentary set-up doesn’t work too well for me and I am especially interested in anything regarding Parker and Hardison. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

3.) oof, we’ve had issues with making sure our stuff is accessible to the hearing-impaired before. I’m sorry to say that there are no transcripts of the commentaries. I’ll see if there’s a solve, but I doubt it.

So I decided to give it a try. This is my first attempt, made by recording the audio from the commentary to the pilot, uploading the first fourteen and a half minutes of that to YouTube, and trying my luck with the Machine Transcription. If you’ve got the DVDs you can see how well it … doesn’t work.

He could be real

Gillian and I watched the first episode of Steven Moffat’s Sherlock last night and Gill remarked that “The cabbie is really creepy.”
“Don’t worry hon, he’s not real.”
“London’s a creepy place, he could be real.”

So I watched the American version of Coupling this evening, and my first impression was that it was much funnier than the preceeding episode of Will and Grace.
Yes, I knew most of the lines, and I was interested to find how some things had been changed, but the thing that really got to me, I think, was the pace.

It was just too damn fast.

And I think the problem there is that, despite the extra running time and the amount of material that had been removed, they still tried to fit in as much as possible from the British script, and it just couldn’t fit. I think (hope) that in later episodes they’ll be able to spread things out a bit better, either by complete removal of sub-sections, or by better integration of original and re-written scripts.

Other than that, there are a few things that struck me. I found Patrick’s “condom line” to be quite clever, actually. Jane was particularly funny, if a bit over-squealy. And truthfully, there had to have been a better analogy to “The Boyfriend Zone” than “In and Out” of the club.

I’m not ready to condemn it yet. I’ve told loads of people to watch Coupling, and hopefully they did. I want to hear some reactions from people who never saw the original.

Is anyone else watching the Powerpuff Girls parody on the Beatles right now? The writer’s use of Beatle’s lyrics is almost brilliant, almost awful in the use of puns. I love the performance criminal Moko Jono.
