30 Days of the Thrilling Adventure Hour, Days Fifteen & Thirty

Day Fifteen – Recommendations
Oooh! First recommendation is The Hidden Almanac by Ursula Vernon (ursulav). She took inspiration after hearing so many people describe Welcome to Night Vale as “Lovecraft meets A Prairie Home Companion“, giving it a listen, and feeling that the Prairie Home Companion comparison wasn’t quite right. She then thought about what would happen if Lovecraft met Garrison Keillor’s other show, The Writer’s Almanac, and thus The Hidden Almanac was born. The show broadcasts three times a week, but with each episode only lasting three or so minutes you can catch up with the entire run (it started last September) in about eight hours of listening.
Next recommendation is Ursula’s other podcast, Kevin and Ursula Eat Cheap, which she hosts with her husband Kevin. On it they get drunk and review pre-packaged foods of varying qualities. Remember, They Eat It So You Don’t Have To!
Leverage – The best con/heist show of the past decade. Great characters, smart writing, and a lot of fun.
And lastly, Black Books. A British sitcom from the early 2000’s it’s incredibly funny and features the habitually drunk/hungover/irritable Bernard Black, a misanthropic bookshop owner. The comedy never quite goes black, but I’d call it very dark grey so watch yourself.

Day Thirty – Favorite Fan Moments
There’s so many things to talk about, but my absolute favorite moment will always be getting to see Karen Gillan and Dave Foley in Sparks Nevada at the live show. The crowd was excited during the theme song, got louder when Mark and Marc entered the stage, went nuts when Dave Foley came out, and absolutely went wild when Karen Gillan came up on stage. It was exhilarating to be part of that audience.

30 Days of the Thriling Adventure Hour, Days Fourteen & Twenty-Nine

Day Fourteen – Adventurekateer Recruitment!
I don’t think I’ve managed to get anyone to listen to the show. I mentioned it to my co-worker’s husband last year and he seemed very interested but I have no idea if he ever followed up and started listening. My parents and brother have heard the occasional episode when they came to visit, and of course my wife started listening after I did. Maybe some of my LJ friends and followers are going to give it a try, after having to read the last couple of weeks of these posts.

Day Twenty-Nine – The Shipping Day
The Doyles. Flat out, I just really appreciate how much in love they are with one another. But that feels like cheating, so I guess I’d have to say my other favorite couple is Abby & Amelia. I guess I kind of hope that when the war is over they can fly off into the sunset together.

30 Days of the Thrilling Adventure Hour, Days Thirteen & Twenty-Eight

Day Thirteen – Favorite Non-Major characters!
Jimmy Stewart – Mark Gagliardi does an awesome Jimmy Stewart impression and I love the subversion of Jimmy’s wholesome image.
Patrick – I really kind of want a Patrick spinoff. It doesn’t have to be full length, but Patrick talking to another Adventurekateer alone could be really fun.
Kevin the Spider – His unobtainable quest for vengeance is a wonderful plot device and Tom Lenk does a great job making him vulnerable and creepy at the same time.

Day Twenty-Eight – Middle Segment Quotes
Am I allowed to quote the entire Philip Fathom from the 2012 Christmas on Mars? How about this bit?
“And what of those colorful villains whose malice
is boundless? I’ve found it’s… well not to sound callous.
My parents were murdered two decades ago
and I don’t have friends, I only have foes.”
Because this is the rhyming version of the “My parent are dead!” Batman meme.

“Dorothy Parker SMASH!” gets me every time.

I’m only half serious here…

I've been throwing around the idea for a few months to do a podcast or blog, in the style of and 's Kevin and Ursula Eat Cheap, reviewing single-serve yogurt. We've been eating a lot of yogurt out here in California and there's quite a large selection available now, far more than when I was growing up – Austalian style, Greek style, European style, fruit on the bottom, blended, pro-biotic, live cultures, cream on the top, fat free, etc…  So, if only to keep notes for myself, let's do this.

Mini Water Heater

“This light bulb was found in a pendant fixture with no globe. The filament had failed, but current was passing through the water, making it warm.

“A faint arcing noise was present. When removed, there was no opening in the base of the bulb and no water leaked out. Hard to explain!”

What the …?

Reblog from my other Tumblr, Home Inspection Nightmares, which reposts the This Old House feature in an easily navigable format. Because the best way to feel better about yourself and your abilities is to look at some of those examples and realize that somebody either a) thought it was a good idea, or b) got paid to do that.

30 Days of the Thrilling Adventure Hour, Days Eleven and Twenty-Six

Day Eleven – Beyond Belief Episodes
Favorite Beyond Beliefs? Let’s start with the Pterodactyl Jones trilogy.
* The Devil and Mr. Jones
* The Devil You Know
* Jones on Third
And to top those off, a Sadie-only and Frank-only episode
* Rosemary’s Baby Shower
* Molar Express

Day Twenty-Six – Guest Stars
Every one of Tom Lennon’s appearances has been gold (though I do kind of wonder what it would’ve been like to keep Patton Oswalt as Pterodactyl Jones.) And as much as I love Nathan Fillion as Cactoid Jim, I really want to hear one of the New York Shows where John Hodgman played Jim. The way the Bens have descibed those performances make them sound inspired. I’ve also started checking out Key & Peele after Keegan Michael Key’s performance as the Die-brarian.

Potential guest stars? For a long time I was amazed that Wil Wheaton had never done the show, but soon the long wait will be over. I’d love to hear Kevin Conroy meet up with Philip Fathom, and Bill Nighy or Christopher Walken would just be astounding.

Showing my Leverage bias here, but I think John Rogers would do an excellent Beyond Belief or Captain Laserbeam.

30 Days of the Thrilling Adventure Hour, Days Ten and Twenty-Five

Day Ten – The Chrono Agency
Oooh, this is a tough one. On the one hand I’d love to hang out with Amelia Earhart, but on the other meeting Shakespeare would be pretty awesome.
I think I’m going to go with Amelia here.

Day Twenty Five – Special Episodes
My favorite special episodes are the Behind the Scenes interviews, especially the one with Paul and Paget. The actual affection that those two hold for each other is clear and I think it adds so much to their boozey fake marriage in the regular show.
