- My Amiibo Learned To Kick My Butt In Super Smash Bros. for Wii U – Siliconera
With the launch of Super Smash Bros. for the Wii-U came Amiibos, little figurines that use NFC to communicate with the game. Players can take their figurine, load a character into the game, and play with it. Changes to the character are stored on the figurine. So this guy took his Amiibo and trained it up to the point that it could regularly beat him in the game. I’m wondering if how good the AI got was merely a function of higher level = playing closer to perfect, or did the training actually create a different playing style.
- The Story Of How A Fox Amiibo Nearly Won A Super Smash Bros. Tournament – Siliconera
Case in point: A mysterious Amiibo was found at a local Smash Bros. tournament and entered in as a joke. And not only did it make it to the semi-finals, it only lost to the eventual winner of the tournament. So if a player’s training has a noticeable effect, we might start to see a real Pokemon-style gameplay evolve around training these virtual characters and pitting them against each other. Which is both fascinating and creepy at the same time.

I’ve long been amazed at the detail that’s gone into the game Dwarf Fortress. Reading these random errors and changelog messages is hilarious. I love how they’re the systemic/textual version of “Noclipping” in 3D games.

All that snow kind of makes me homesick. I loved the woman who told off the reporter for the report that got the downhill sledding shut down.

Eclipse photos
I stayed up late last night to watch the lunar eclipse and take some photos.
These all came from a little 5x optical zoom point & shoot so all in all I’m satisfied with the quality. I’ve had some time to learn more about the various settings on the camera and I’ve gotten over my disdain for the digital zoom. They’re clearly better than the photos I took last April.
See?
