- The History of Key Design: From Ancient Wooden Rods to the Hotel Keycard – Slate Magazine
This reminds me of the time Gill and I were walking around that Scottish castle and we left just before closing time. They had already shut the gates for the evening, so the gatekeeper pulled out this gigantic key that must have been ten inches long and about ten pounds of brass to unlock the gate.

Apparently, at the age of 82 Monet had radical cataract surgery for the time – he had the entire lens removed from his left eye. With no cataracts (or lens) he was able to perceive color again, including the ultraviolet that the lens had previously blocked.

- 6 Nobodies Who Turned Into Superheroes without Warning | Cracked.com
#4 is the story that makes me stop and think. A widower who lost his wife to a likely suicide patrols the East Sussex Cliffs, trying to prevent other suicides.
“Completely untrained in counseling, Lane has so far managed to prevent 29 people from leaping off the cliff. In his first year of punching suicide in the face, he received a Royal Humane Society Award for tackling a woman about to go over the edge, which sort of explains the ‘untrained in counseling’ bit.”

Looking for hammered dulcimer music today and I ran across this track by “Hammered Dulcimer”. I love the feel of it, like it’s meant to be played alongside an old-fashioned silent movie.
