Sign up now to take free classes online. From Hogwarts. I don’t know if this counts as a massive online open course or as a massive online role-playing game, but either way it’s kind of fantastic. And of course, now all those people on LJ who insist on marking Hogwarts as a school they’ve attended can finally get the education they’ve long claimed. This vine, native to Chile & Argentina, engages in an amazing act of mimicry. Not only is it a plant mimic, not only can it mimic multiple species, it can mimic multiple species on the same vine. If a vine crawls across the forest floor, climbs up one tree, then jumps over to another tree, it will have different leaf shapes in all three locations. I was in Michael’s a little while ago and saw that the Suncatcher kits they sell nowadays are really just plastic forms with paint. I was wondering what had happened to the ones I remembered from my childhood, where we’d sprinkle plastic beads into a metal frame and melt them in the oven. Apparently those have gone away, but this lady has figured out a way to replicate the process with plastic toy beads. (tags: 2014-06-11craftschildhoodhow-to )
Great article about Teller (of Penn & Teller) producing a version of “The Tempest” that emphasizes the magic of Prospero. (tags: 2014-06-11magicshakespearetheatrestagecraft )
This beautiful tree, located in east LA, is hung with dozens of lit chandeliers. And it’s now apparently turning into a nice little spot to propose marriage. (tags: 2014-06-11via ljlos angeleslightingmagicart )
